Since 1989, the Santanyí municipal archives are part of an agreement between the Consell Insular de Mallorca (CIM) and the Santanyí Town Hall for the recovery of the town’s documental heritage.

The municipal archives were organized by Beatriu Zamorano Galmés and Antoni Ballester Miró, who belonged to the CIM technical teams under the direction of Francesc Riera Vayreda, head of libraries and archives of the Consell, and coordinated by Isabel Garau, in charge of the CIM archives. They focused their efforts and time on organizing the different municipal archives.

Beatriu Zamorano was the town archivist between 1992 and 2001. She worked four years on the Campos archives. She is now archivist of Campos. Since 2002 the Santanyí municipal archives are managed by Cristian Fuster McAlpine.

The archives were initially located in the clock tower of the Town Hall. In 1996 the municipal archives were moved to new facilities which improved the situation. The facilities include an office and three main document deposits. The first one is located in the building attached to the Town Hall in the former library. The second one was located in the Town Hall, by the office.

The third deposit, located also in the Town Hall, was used as a deposit for the archives auxiliary library. In the past years, new problems have arisen and have affected the archives facilities directly or indirectly. The problems are common to all municipal archives.

The lack of physical space in the document deposits and the needs of the municipal offices have forced the Town Council to establish a transfer plan and the provision of services and infrastructure for the archives.
