OTHER POPULATION CENTRES

S'Alqueria Blanca

At the foot of the oratory of Nuestra Señora de la Consolación, five kilometres from Santanyí heading towards Cala d'Or and Portopetro, we find S'Alqueria Blanca. Its name was already documented in 1242. There is a defence tower from 1586. In the 18th century, when the pirate threat was over, it began to become consolidated as a population centre. The oldest known family has the surname Rigo de Can Timoner.

Calonge

Calonge is situated between S'Alqueria Blanca and Cala d'Or. This centre has appeared in documents since the 13th century, when it belonged to the Valentí de ses Torres, family, among whom was Bartomeu Valentí, canon of the Cathedral. Its Neo-Romanesque church from the beginning of the 20th century, which was planned by the priest Antoni Maria Alcocer and blessed in 1909 by Bishop Campins, should be highlighted.

Es Llombards

This is a population centre 3.5km from Se Salines and from Santanyí. In its territory we can find Cap de ses Salines, the most southerly point in Mallorca. There are remains of human presence in the Pre-talayotic period. Es Llombards reached its maximum population in 1950, with 638 inhabitants. Since then, and due to the crisis in the traditional agricultural and stock-rearing activities, it has experienced a 30% decline in population.

Cala Llombards

Centre situated between Cala Santanyí and S'Almunia built around a spectacular beach formed by the mouth of the Son Morlà torrent. The centre appeared at the beginning of the '60s, when Rafel Vidal Perelló, of Can Felip, built a house. In 1969, development of the land of the old Son Amer estate began, promoted by Blai Vidal Salom and characterised by houses rather than flats.

Cala Santanyí

Situated between Cala Figuera and Cala Llombards, in the 20s it included a few houses and fishermen's huts. It began to be developed in the '60s. The first tourist establishment was the Es Torrent bar. The Cala Santanyí Hotel was built in 1961. Today it is a beautiful and important tourist area.

Son Moja

Residential area made up of houses which began to be built in the '80s.

Cala Figuera

Made up of the Boira and Busquets coves, this centre already appears in documents in 1306. Santanyí stone was loaded on to ships at Cala Figuera for transport. A boathouse built in the middle of the 19th century by the priest José Burguesa and the doctor Bernat Escales was the first building. The first house dates from 1899 and belonged to the owners of Can Ferrereta. The first church, now a pizza restaurant, was built in 1938. A small market and the quay were built in 1950. Since 1963, tourist growth has not stopped in the area.

Portopetro

It used to form part of the Sa Punta estate. At the beginning of the 20th century, the area began to be divided into plots and some sites were sold, forming the first population centre. The first stone of the current church was laid on 27 May 1954.

Cala d'Or

This is one of the newest centres in Santanyí. Its origins go back to 1932, when its founder, José Costa, fixed on the land to create a development. It is ironic that Costa, who came from Ibiza, gave it the name of Cala d'Hort, the same name as a cove on the island of Ibiza. But, the passing of the years and usage altered the name to Cala d'Or. Among the first inhabitants of the area were the folklore expert Antoni Mulet, the painters Olegari Junyent and Anglada Camarassa and Natasha Rambova, widow of Rudolph Valentino. In 1956, the developer donated a site to build a church, which was done in Ibizan style, as were many houses, giving the area something of the atmosphere of that island.

El Cap des Moro

Situated between Cala Figuera and S'Amarador, it was developed in the '80s.
